Great site! I spent 30-years in the AF but was "too young" for the Stratojet and Hustler...I remain a big fan of both. I did fly B-52s, FB and F-111s, and B-1s, but would have liked to have a turn in the earlier bombers. I got to climb through the static displays at Dyess and Plattsburgh...what a view! I enjoyed listening to the -47 and -58 vets as a young co-pilot, stationed at Seymour Johnson, in the early 70s. Col (USAF, Ret) Tom Moncure

Accidentally stumbled across your site and thank you for the effort you are contributing. I was at Dyess from 1958 till 1961. My favorite story is when they assigned the C130 and an engine fell off on a south T/O. Recovery unit found a P/U with engine running. Driver thought it was a bomb and jumped out of his P/U and RAN across a field.

The site brings back memories. I flew with 98th BW, 345 BS at Lincoln from 1959-1965. We had one low level VFR run each year for a while, to demonstrate "aileron reversal". I know 445 knots at 50 to 100 feet is moving out. We buzzed my home town and the farm of my brother-in-law. If I remember correctly, we also lost 13 aircraft in one 12 month period. Primarily engine failure and turbine chunk failure. I then went to C-130's and after returning from Vietnam went to B-52's. It was a sleek aircraft. Lots of stories! Court Braden

Hello My name is David Godin I served with pride at PAFB from 1976-1980. I worked in Fuel Cell. I have been trying for years to find a way to reach others who I worked and served with. Is there a place I can go? my email address: elijlyn.@yahoo.com Last year I stopped by the base (2004) they were starting to dismantle the barricks. I grabed a brick and brought it home. It was sad to see that, there was another guy who had stopped by also and was standing looking at the barricks, so we stood there for a few moments in silence, smiled at each other shook hands and got back into our cars and drove off. Thanks for having this site.

Having been a B-47 Crew Chief for 3 1/2 year's on flying status allowed many memories to return re: the B-47. 49253 was the "tail number." With the underside of the wings, stabilizer and fuselage painted white so as to reflect the "flash" of an "A" bomb explosion, it was an exciting A/C but took a lot of work to keep it clean. When LeMay made his "customary" surprise visit to Pinecastle AFB, walked into Base Ops and saw that my airplane was on "initial status", he turned to his C0-pilot and said..."get that crew chief out here. I want to fly that airplane so at 3 o'clock in the morning, I get a call to get to the base ASAP. LeMay wants to fly your airplane. I did and wanted to go with them but was denied. When the staff car pulled up, LeMay got out, I gave him a sharp salute and he just kinda waved his arm as he climbed the ladder. Cranked up and he was gone for 4 hours. Landed, taxiied up and parked and when he came down the ladder, he faced me, gave me a "sharp salute" and said..."That is the first B-47 that I've ever flown that I couldn't find anything wrong with it!!!" I made T/Sgt. in 3 years!!! A GREAT Web site. Thank you!!!!! Gene Hall lilypad05@mtnisp.com

By Anthony-Geruntino-Assistant crew chief The Cold war days are over but not forgotten. The greatest war never fought was during the cold war days of the 60, 70, and the 80's. We had 110 EB- and B 47-E's ready to go during the Cuban crisis in 1962 and then we gaurded our B-47's planes with M1 rifes on 12 hour shifts. Lockbourne AFB . OHIO This was in Oct 1962. The B-47 was an ausome sight to see take off with rocket assist and full 550 gallons of water alcohol burning at the same time. It looked like a rocket ship just trembling to get into the air. With fire and black smoke everywhere to go with it. I served many months on Full alert readness in the Mole hole at lockbourne AFB .We got a great country and mabe even greater back then. To all the B-47 Flight crews and maintenance crews which are amoung the best their is, Thank you.

Many thanks to Jim Diamond as he posted our Eighth Air Force Museum Associations "Wall of Memories" brick program flyer on your website. It's the associations job to assist the 8AF Museum director with fundraising activities and special projects such as our annual "Silent Auction" and our new "Mall of Memories" brick project, whereas all funds go back into the museum projects that the 8 AF Museum appropriated budget cannot support. We have on display B-47E serial number 53-2276, and she sits proudly in the airpark, the first bomber displayed as visitors walk the museum's airpark, accompanied by seven other bombers. The Stratojet recently received TLC through the museum's "Adopt a Plane" program, receiving fresh paint and polishing to remove years worth of sticky Louisiana weather. The efforts of our fund raising allows such maintenance to take place and we look forward to continuing to do so, and preserving the History of Aerial Bombardment! Sincerly, Mike Kaplan, Vice President, 8AF Museum Association

I read the postings and I also have fond memories of the B-47. I was initially transferred to the 91st Reconnaisance Wing at Lockbourne AFB, OH in January 1957 and was assigned to the 323rd Squadron. When the 91st was deactivated, we were reassigned to the 376th Wing (ECM). I was assigned to the 512th Squadron.I remained with the 376th until December 1962, when I was transferred to Naha AB, Okinawa with the C-130 squadron. Interestingly enough, I was rummaging through my old Air Force records just yesterday and ran across several copies of special orders that had managed to elude the trash can over the years. I served in the 2nd AF in the 379th A&E sqd before transferring to the 19th bomb wing 19th A&E sqd. I served in Homestead AFB, Florida. We had both bomb wing on the base at one time, with each wing consisting of 45 B-47s each. We also had one RB-47 which each wing used as needed. Was a great thing to be in the SAC. Enjoyed my stay very much. Was in Homestead from 1958-1962. Am looking for anyone who would like to write and talk over old times. When I transferred to the 19th bomb wing we went under the 8th AF jurisdiction. Contact me Barry K. Grimm grimmsplace@adelphia.net I was in the Armament section (flight line)

NEW MEMOIR by SAC Aircraft Commander: Dear Mr. Diamond: The "Gone in 144 Seconds" feature you replied to on 12/23/2005 referred to an excerpt from my article "A Full Retaliatory Response," on SAC crews in the Cuban Missile Crisis, published in Air & Space Smithsonian in their Oct/Nov 2005 issue. The following link takes you to that excerpt, called "Minimum Interval Takeoff". (It was renamed from 'Gone in 144 Seconds'). http://www.airandspacemagazine.com/ASM/Mag/Supp/ON05/MITO.html My new book, "Sky Walking: An Astronaut's Memoir," can now be ordered online and will be in bookstores on 1 Feb 2006. I was a SAC B-52 aircraft commander before flying the shuttle with NASA. I'm sure you'll enjoy the read. My colleague, B-47 pilot and former Nat'l Air and Space Museum director Walter Boyne heartily endorses the book: "a must-read for any astronaut aspirant and for any citizen who wants to see just how great a country is the United States." Thanks to all B-47 crews who helped with preparation of my article. Wish I'd flown the -47, too! Respectfully, Tom Jones, SAC 1978-83, www.astronauttomjones.com

He was on B-29s in WW-II and ended on B-58 in 1966 at Bunker hill AFB. I'm sure he was a navigator or weapons specialist on the B-47. Hi All! A great site all around on the B-47 program! As a SAC member in the 50's & 60's I worked on the B-52 & KC-135 at Minot ND. I always followed & heard great stories on the B-47 & tanker fleet of the KC-97's that kept them in the air! I am retired NJANG & now a member of the BAHF(www.spiritoffreedom.org)who now own & soon will bring back to the skies our Boeing C-97G,one of ONLY 2 that are still AIRWORTHY in the WORLD today! We are turning HER into a "Flying Museum Exibit" of COLD WAR HISTORY. This Mighty Boeing STRAT has so many interesting stories to tell & touch the lives of many folks & airman along the way! So STAY tuned on our progress with our Boeing STRAT C-97G N522718 which flew with the WISS.ANG as a KC-97L in the sixties.

Worked on the RB47s and the ECM B-47s.Lived on the Trailer Park on Base and saw many of crashes at our end of the run way. Interesting that one of the comments was from an Airman who was on duty when one crashed and came close to his guard shack at the back gate and he took off running. My name is Duane Judd. I served as a MA-7 Bomb-Navigation Systems mechanic on B-47's at March AFB in California from 1958 to 1961. I was with the 320th and later the 22nd Bomb Wing, which I think was part if the 15th Air Force at that time. This is a great web site. It brings back many memories of my time there. The Bomb Nav system was challenging to work on, but it was a great system for that time. My e-mail address is duanejudd@gmail.com if anyone would like to contact me.

I joined the B-47 "club" in '59 as a NB at the famous 20th BS/2nd BW Hunter AFB in Savannah,Ga. My collection of B-47 "war tales" are quite interesting (who can forget Bruce Kulka --MK-4 at Florence, SC during a USCM deploy? He was in my sqdn. I also joined the "spot promotion" club, which both helped and hindered my career. Most exciting: Low level overwater and pur first KC-135 refueling. Anybody remember target "A" at Atlanta? I flew with the nav from MacDill that dropped an MB-$ on it after receiving a triangulated score from a live drop at Avon Park. Cheers, Ken Brown 271 Cochran Dr. Byron, Ga. 31008

Thanks, for this site. My father was a maintainer of the radar for the tail gun. He was stationed at Barksdale in Shreveport, La. I followed sort of in that I spent 20 years as a fire control guy on F-111's and F-16's. I was allowed inside the B-47 at Eglin a few years ago and it was nostalgic for me to imagine working on that plane. I really admire and respect those before me who suffered through rough conditions to do the job I did so comfortably. Norm Steinruck, Tsgt, ret Airtran Airways redvoyager@yahoo.com

I was the 6th officer assigned to Wichita AFB. I set up the PX in a tent, then moved it to the basement of an old warehouse building downtown where all but the flying offices were while the base was being built. I began flying the B-47 in 1952. When I went through the school all of my classmates were civilian test pilots for the companies that would be building 47s. After that, I was a T-33 instructor, then headed the engineering flight test section at the base, before going to 3 SAC Wings, ending at SAC HQ. as D/MATs. B-58 Project Officer. If you would like to know more about that era, read my book "PILOTO,Migrant Worker to Jet Pilot". Hank Cervantes

Hi Everyone! I just found this site while searching for information on the RB-47H. I was a crew chief on those at Forbes AFB, Topeka, KS from 1957 to 1961. Some of the most wonderful years of my life. The RB-47 which now sits in the museum in Dayton, Ohio is one of the planes I worked on at one time. It was also on display in my home town of Salina, Kansas for over 30 years prior to being move to Dayton and refurbished. What a thrill to see it sitting there in that condition again.

Although I spend about 6 hours a day on the computer, both for my job and also writing my nearly complete book on the B-47, I spend almost no time browsing the Internet. I check my stocks, my bank, my email but am remiss in looking up great things, like this site. Thanks for the reminder from Dick Purdom in response to a question I asked him about a B-47 flying under the Mackinac Bridge. (I haven't found the article he referenced, yet. Apparently a John Lappo did it.

Terriic site. Was a Nav/ Bombardier in B-45s at RAF Station Sculthorpe,England from 55-58. After upgrading at Mather AFB in Sacramento and crew training at McConell in Witchita, was stationed at Whiteman AFB in Knob Noster,Missouri from 59-62 in the 340th Bomb Wing, 488 Bomb Sqdn. Was amazed by the big radar scope, periscpic sextant port and ejection seat, even if it was downward. I'd like to hear from any other Whitemanites. Frank Giaquinto g5a52000@yahoo.com

I ran through the guest book and found no entries from folks that served at Pinrcastle AFB Florida. I was with the 321st A&E and responsible for the K Bom Nav systems of the 445th Bomb Sqdn. Our wing CO was Mike McCoy dean of the B-47 commanders, he took delivery of the first B-47. He was killed in Oct 57 and Pinecastle was renamed McCoy AFB which was after my time. I got in on forming the 321st with old B model aircraft, no ejection seats. The B-47 was a wonderful aircraft. Every month I go into Pima Air Museum and stand in the forward wheel well of their 47 and let my mind wander to a time long ago. Ben Fisher wa3tgc@dakotacom.net

Great site. I was a "Teenage asn't crew chief" 68th BW, Lake Charles, later Chenault later Lake Charles AFB Louisiana. My aircraft was B-47e 5207 The crew chief Sgt. Staniewicz and I would constantly order new cockpit parts for a spiffy cockpit. The powers to be finallygot wise to us and all parts requests would have to go through grumpy ole Master Sgt.Cheek who would always deny our order. He would also take these occaisons to tell us that we could be "Saved" if we would come to church with him come Sunday. We wou;d reply that if he came to New Orleans with us on Saturday it would be a life changing experience for him. He would tear off in the Maint. truck shaking his head and tsk tsking us. I just discovered your site. I flew B-47s for 8 years at Lincoln AFB, Nebraska going from copilot to instructor pilot in the standardization board. The highlight of this time was winning the SAC Bombing, Navigation and Air Refueling Competition for the 307th Bomb Wing in 1959. I later flew B-52s but the B-47 sticks in my memory as it required all three crewmembers to get the job done. Dale K. Christians, Lt Col (R)

2,166 hours in the Beast, 3 years without a late takeoff while at Lockbourne 301st BW, 419th and 352nd BS. Most admired Sqdr Commander Al Cotton (tail) the big bunny. We had a pussy cat mission flying 2 EWO,s around the sky in the bomb bay, they rode backwards. The isleway was alwys cramed with 3 guys for takeoff and landing. one time I had a b-52H sqdr commander behind the CP's seat riding up from Homestead; Col Hargraves! I was a 15 year old kid at Moses Lake in 1948 and 49 when the testing was ongoing and saw it flying there many times. The last time I saw a 47 in flight was at Yokata 1967. My first flight was at Lake Charles 1955 right out of Cadets. She sure made a lot Widows for never serving in combat though every flight was a USCM. g l clark cocoa florida

Rotated to Brize-Norton air base and further went to Wheelus AFB and flights to black sea area. I still think the B-47 is the best looking a/c ever produced. My dad - Whiteman (60-62), then Pease (63-65) 100BW, a/c was Maj Charlie Word and Co-pilot was 1Lt Jim Cooper. We lived at the run-up end at the southern approach to the runway at Pease and I spent hours watching just about everything in the AF inventory take off and land. There was no better way to grow up for a future pilot. Someone asked about a crash at Pease - approx date was winter of 64, maybe early 65. One of my dad's friends, Capt Birch was lost. It was a late night run-up and we heard the plane take off. Shortly after - sirens all over. I've always guessed it was icing related. Very sad. There was also a KC97 crash during a MITO takeoff (onto the the Pease golf course) that same year. My dad and the other two were a select crew and I think they were the best ever. I will never forget those years and the most beautiful airplane ever to fly. BTW, last I heard B4 my dad died was that General Word was in Florida and Colonel Cooper is in Nebraska. Steve Darfler. Great Site: it really helped me feel closer to my father and his time in the Air Force he was jet mach. on the B-47 at Hunter AFB 1958-1960. I would like some help finding out about the Maint Sq he belonged to, but the only info I have is from his DD214 in the No. 26 box -decorations, awards ect.. Which says "SO A-56 Hq 308th Wg 6 Mar 59" if any one could help that would be great. Daniel Walling, E-Mail: danielwalling@hot.rr.com

Either no one is leaving comments, or those hackers sure are busy! Hope this works. My dad was a B-47 pilot SAC 509th BW, 715th Squadron. His plane crashed on take-off Feb. 6, 1956 due to engine explosion from overspeed condition (not unusual for B-47s, I'm told). All survived, partially due to freak snow storm in NM which dampened flames--my dad used snow to extinguish fire on his body. His name is John (Jack) Cosbey. Anybody out there remember this or connected in any way? Dad is still alive and kickin'. We are all proud of his service...and guts. They all had guts! Thanks. My first time at your site--keep it up!

To the person who didn't his/her name asking about a crash his/her dad was involved in and survived. I am currently finishing up my manuscript on the C/KC-97. The R-4360s consumed oil at a prodigious rate. Several folks told me that they had seen KC-97s with 5-gallon oil drums onboard, presumably for increased endurance. My question is where they carried for gound replinisment, or did some enterprising crew chiefs actually plumb the drums into the engine oil tanks? al.t.lloyd@boeing.com

Several days ago I googled “B-47” seeking information about my father, B-47 Pilot, Major Daniel James Campion, Pease AFB/100th BW/351st BSq/Deceased 08Dec64. Thus, I entered The B-47 Stratojet Association through its comments section by Jack O'Leary and Donald Cassidy. Pleasantly surprised, I received immediate responses from them, Sigmund Alexander, and Andy Labosky. Each man gave me concise directions ultimately leading me to post an inquiry here. Moreover, viewing the entire site has made me a more respectful woman. Thank you for honoring our servicemen and our veteran servicemen, in particular for me, B-47 crewmen. In this way you honor all whose hearts serve justice and liberty. Ray Sorensen, you are an American hero for your “ALL GAVE SOME-SOME GAVE ALL” Painting on Hwy 25, Iowa, USA. I publicly thank my father, my father-in-law, Gerald Nelson Campbell, VFW WWII, and my uncle, Thomas F. This is in answer to al.t.llloyd@boeing.com about oil consumption an KC-97's. The aircraft had a oil tank at each engine plus a central oil tank just below the cockpit that you could service any engine when needed. I never seen it done, but I guess you could have poured oil into the central tank from a barrel. It would have been tricky. The biggest mess I ever had on a KC-97 was when one very cold night they were servicing my central tank from a service truck that kept the oil heated. Some how the nozzle got away from him and it dumped hot oil all over a very cold airplane. (Just inside the front entryway) I spent all night cleaning that mess. I was Asst. Crew Chief on KC-97 52-2804. 1958 to 1960. As we speak Mike Hill, SAC Brat, is writing the 307th Bomb Wing, Lincoln AFB history. Please send Mike any good stories and pictures of your time at Lincoln AFB. I enjoy your web site Jim. Ken Tarwater nanatar@kc.rr.com

My grandfather was Colonel Michael Norman Wright McCoy, who died before I was born in 1958. My dad, Allyn Linquist worked under him and married his daughter (my mom), Pamela, who still lives in Tampa. Obviously I am interested in hearing any and all stories involving McCoy and his life and times. I hear over and over again how much of a "man's man" he was with a history that included boxing, raising horses, flying with the RCAF and he even had a gift for sketching, believe it or not. There's a story about him falling into a snow bank when his chute failed to open once, after which he gathered it up and walked back to the guy who packed it. He dropped it in front of him and said, "It didn't open." All this and a bomber wing too! It's a shame his life was cut short. Any and all feedback will be extremely appreciated! ericlinquist@ericlinquist.net

Sure enjoyed the first page picture of AMARC. I live about 5 miles from there during the winter. I don't imagine that there are any B-47s there anymore. I was an ECM tech for the 91st A&E at Lockbourne ABF, Columbus, OH, for about 6 months in 1957 before returning to Keesler for 7-level school. Upon return, the 376th had come up from Barksdale and the 91st was decommissioned. ECM was the primary mission of the 376 so we worked pretty hard and often. I was discharged in July, 1960. Never rode a B-47, although we did have one flying status slot. Later on, as a Naval Reserve Officer in the Intelligence Program, I would serve with a guy who was a co-pilot on B-47s. I joined the Naval Reserve Submarine Reserve in 1963, was commissioned in 1972 and retired as an O-5 in 1995. 36 years in all. Lots of memories and Lockbourne AFB and B-47s are among the best. Reading thru this sign-in book brings back bad, good and great memories of 529thBS, 380th Bw, Plattsburgh, NY during the period 9/7/57 to 5/20/63. The only 10 OER in the officer corps I ever knew was the 380th Wing Commander Alvin C. Gilliam (sp). I'm 72 and my memory for correct spelling has never been that good. One of your entries, 1/16/62 crash, is hard to recall. Could someone give me the names of the crew-member? My best friend, Gary Simpson, was killed in the mid-air collison over the north Atlantic. Those were the only casualties I recall for the above period. As for the crash just over the fence at Plattsburgh, Major Golden's crew successfully ejected just after takeoff with no fatalities. I have no memory of a B-52 crashing in that time frame. With four squadrons of B-47's and the KC-97s at PBurg, I had expected to see more comments from you guys who served at PBurg. Hello to you all and keep serving the good ole USA. Don Gage, Major, USAF, Retired,Nav/Bomb. eb66@cox.net

July 19-07 What a great website! My name is Larry Werner, from Leesville La.I was with 384 th OMS from Apr 1959-July 17 1962. I was asst/crew chief with C/C s/sgt Lobley.I was there at Little Rock when one of our B-47's crashed into Little Rock.We did TDY at Sidi Slimane and Nouisaeur AB's, Morroco. I witnessed two inflight refueling flights from the 4th man seat;numerous similated bomb drops on American cities, and was there on duty when a Mig-15 flew over our alert facility in Morroco. This was mentioned in the Biography of Gen. Curtis Lemay on A&E.I was repromanded for going on a high speed low level flight over Lake Village Ark. We had a B47 return from Morroco with my friend Chuck Martinovic aboard as 4th man-- that bellied in after flying non stop-without refueling from Morroco. That's when we knew for sure that a B47's range was at least 3 times the 1500 miles as published. What an awsome experience to function as C/C on an alert ground crew-with 15 B47's, each loaded with a nuclear bomb, with a target somewhere in Russia! All that forever changed my life-and I am truly honored to have had the opportunity at 19-21 years old. Thanks for the memories

Does anyone remember the B-47 and KC-97 that were ‘parked’ near the parachute building at Lincoln Air Force Base in Lincoln NE? If you have any information I would sure like to hear from you. http://www.lincolnkings.com/lafb/images/b47.jpg There were some fighters just south of Bowling Lake at the same time. Any idea where they were from or what happened to them when the base closed? http://www.lincolnkings.com/lafb/images/fighters.jpg Thanks. Jeff King, jeffrey892@inebraska.com

Thanks for putting up this site. I am a new 42 year old convert to early american jet airplanes. I am a fine art photographer looking for the most poinient images I can find and create. Favorites: F104 Starfighter , B58 Hustler-just because of how I came know these aircraft. It all started with an F-80/T33 at Chino airport California in and among the weeds and wrecks and trucks and jet engines. The sun was setting through a dusty streaked windshield. I shot it and printed a tight shot of the canopy. Then I endeavored to find out what jet if was. Was is the famed Saber I had heard about in a Chuck Berry song about Christmas? It took many many searches to locate the model type. All I had was my tight cockpit shot and the rememberance that the wings were strait and tipped with fuel pods. An F-80, well actually probably a T-33, cause the picture has a canopy that goes out of the frame and seems to have room for another seat. Now I started to get hooked on history. Mach 1, 2, 3... I am mezmerized and hooked. I want to hear the howling of an F104, I want to be strapped into the claustrophobic third seat of a B-58 with only a tiny window on each side and a pilot holding my life at his fingertips at 1400 miles an hour- hoping that all four j-57'
