First time visitor and just checking it out I was a B-47E Co-Pilot with 343rd BS in the 98th SAW at Lincoln AFB, NB. Believe I was on last B-47 to take off and land at Lincoln. Took several to boneyard before being transfered to 55th SRW at Forbes in Topeka in January 1966. I was a airframe and engine mechanic on TDY from Eglin to Project WIBAC (Wichita Boeing Aircraft) to the Boeing plant in Wichita. That was before they had a base there.I can`t remember any of the tail numbers we had but they were a couple of unlettered numbers and A models. We did get A couple of B`s before we were shipped back to Eglin. Col.Paul W Tibbits was our commander and Lt Col Jim Farabee was his excutive officer. They both were from the Enola Gay crew. I'm the guy, who as a young fellow was "run over" and "blown over" by a B47 taking off at Bruntingthorpe in England. I am privileged to have an article about it, from the other side of the fence so to speak, published in the latest B47 Association newsletter. In case any crewmember, or ground crew, in touch with the B47 Association website, remembers this and wants to make contact me, my name is Alec Bailey, and you can email me at bailon@acay.com.au. My compliments to all associated with the B47 Association and their contribution to this web site, which leaves for posterity personal experience and detail to a vital role in history.

Good to see a site dedicated to the preservation of the B-47 community. My grandfather was a Navigator on the B-47, proud to have served through WWII and into the Cuban Missile Crisis. It would be good to hear from any of you who have known Lt/Capt/Maj Robert Winters, USAF. He died in 1982, but I would like to know more about my grandfather if I can find it. Great airplane...and an even greater tradition! My dad, Robert K. Friedli, was an A/C in the 360th Sqdn., 303 Bomb Wing at Davis-Monthan AFB in the fifties. He and his crew were a "select crew" and I am justifiably very proud of their accomplishments. I would be honored to hear from anyone associated with the B-47 - one of the most important (and least heralded) airplanes of all time! Am looking for information about an incident at Dyess AFB involving a B-47, I think in the Fall of 1959. The A/C and Nav ejected but the copilot's seat malfunctioned. He then headed for the hold left by the Nav's ejection but stumbled across the unconscious instructor nav laying in the isle. He later crawled back up into the copilot's seat and landed the airplane at Dyess. They made a TV movie of it, and I think there could have been a book. If anyone has information on this incident, please contact me at RMCCARTAN@AOL.COM.

Hello, My name is Bart Vandamme and I am doing some research about a B-47 crew. In April 1957, the 380th deployed to Brize Norton, UK for a three months period. During this deployment, Wing's B-47 inaugurated the "Three Capitals" air race. The occasion was the Paris Air Show held at Le Bourget Field in Paris, France. On May 28, 1957, three B-47s from the 380th BW took off from Brize Norton and flew over Le Bourget to start the race. The objectif of the race was to fly from Paris to Madrid to Rome and back to Paris, and the prize was the General Electric Trophy. A B-47E from the 529th BS won the 2,346 statute miles race in 4 hours 12 minutes and 7 seconds, with an average speed of 558 miles per hour. The aircraft, commanded by Capt. Robert E. Sheridan was piloted by 1st Lt. J.L.Mombrea with Capt. Frank R. Beadle as Observer. It would be very useful for my project to contact this B-47 crew or some family. Some pictures of this crew would be great to obtain. Can somebody help me? Many thanks, Bart Belgium

As a youth in Florida I lived in St. Petersburg and got to see the B-47's take off over Tampa Bay and fly off over the Gulf of Mexico. Best Bird in the world for a gracefull flying. One day while working on a cooling tower on the second floor of a motel on St. Pete Beach I looked up to see a B-47 at my hight comming at me. I was looking a the pilot, who was looking at a mape or some folded up paper. He looked up and we just stared at each other. We were going to die. Thank the Lord he pulled right and up clearing the motel and me buy not more than 200 feet from me and 50 feet above. I was safe but he was not, for he now was flying south down the beach directly over the motels and heading for the 8th floor of the 12 story Don-Ce- Sar Hotel. There was a great cloud of black smoke from all engines and he pulled up and cleared the Hotel with no more than a 50 feet of day light. If you were the pilot that day I can tell you that you had a silver helment on with a yellow stripe on the rim. Thanks for the close up view of my favorite jet bomber. Ralph T. I was young airmen, stationed at HUNTER, AFB, Ga., from Nov.1959 until Jun 1961, with the 2nd BW, 308th BS and nothing thrilled me more than to watch the B-47's takeoff under full power. What a thrill! It is still a vivid memory for me. I think this is a wonderful web-site and I have enjoyed every comment from my fellow servicemen. I would enjoy hearing from any airmen stationed at HUNTER or any other AFB. I was re-assigned to the 4042nd BW at KI Sawyer, AFB, Mi., with the B-52H's.until May 1963. I was and still am proud to have served our great country during the "Cold War" and feel the men of SAC and other AF Commands contributed to keeping our country from being attacked.
