I found your site by accident while looking for some information on the B-47. I remember my late Uncle telling me years ago that when he first went to work for Boeing, at the Wichita plant that one of his first engineering jobs was the Stratojet. His name was Robert Funke, and by all accounts, he and all the people that worked on the B-47 project did a great job. Thanks for keeping its history alive. jasdavis45@hotmail.com P.S. Hasegawa has a pretty good B-47E in 1/72nd scale if your looking.

I was stationed at Schilling AFB, Salina, Kansas from 1957 to 1962 working on the T2A Bomb Nav Trainer and The B-47 Simulator. My OIC in simulators was Capt Bobby Hodges, a member of the Weber Ejection Seat Club. I had the opportunity to be associated with some of the finest pilots and navigators in the Air Force. I get a very lonely feeling everytine I see the B-47 or pictures of it. An outstanding site; I really enjoy it. Keep up the good work. My name is Doug Valen and I was a copilot in the 307th BW at Lincoln AFB, NE from about 1960 to 1965. I flew with Bud Timmons and Norm Menke most of that time. Just wondering if anyone can tell me about the accidents that killed two of my pilot training classmates: Ed Shuller and Ken Hamrick. One or both may have been out of Lockbourne AFB. Enjoyed the site and will check back from time to time.

SSgt John Shiflett, A1C Louis Ramos and I (Kenneth Vine), were the ground crew at RAF Brize Norton for the B-47 we named the Cajun Queen. None of us were from Lousiana, just sounded like a good name. Even painted the name and face of a woman on the fusalage just to the left of the entering hatch. After about 6 months we were ordered to remove the name and picture as current AF policy then (1963) did not allow us to name our aircraft.

Anybody know what ever happen to aircraft S/N 52-609, this B47-E was the #1000th b47 built at Wichita Kansas, and named "the city of salina". for many years a b47 sat at the old abandon schilling AFB with the name city of salina on it but it wasn't aircraft S/N 52-609, it was a later model with the name painted on it. The fake city of salina was taken to wright pat and restored and is now on display in the cold war exibit. it's a shame that the real city of salina was destroyed and the fake is liveing a charmed retirement. Re Kurt S. Entress on City of Salina. There is no guarantee that only one aircraft had a given name. The aircraft in the USAF Museum is an RB-47H not an B-47E. Both aircraft carried the same name. Look at the Memphis Belle a B-17 of notiriety. The first was a B-17F assigned to the 91st BG at Bassingborn, England. It was the first Eighth Air Force bomber to achieve 25 combat mission during the dark early days when the Might Eighth's loss rate would have been 400% in the first year. Subseqently there were other Memphis Belles, including an F-105 in Southeast Asia. The latest is Memphis Belle V, flagship of the 2nd BW at Barksdale AFB, headquarters of the Eighth Air Force. A. T. Submitted by Bob bowman, 2-5-04. My first assignment out of B-47 crew training at McConnell was with the 90th SRW at Forbes. While waiting for a permanent crew assignment, I had the opportunity to fly a couple of times with navigator John McKone. John and I spent some non-flying time together since we were in the same fraternity (Phi Delta Theta, he at U of Kansas and me at Ga. Tech). Since the 90th SRW was converted to a crew-training wing in May 1958, John went to the 55th SRW across the runway at Forbes. I was transferred to the 98th BW at Lincoln and was assigned to a permanent crew in June 1958. On July 1, 1960, McKone’s RB-47H was shot down by MIG-17’s over the Barents Sea near the Kola Peninsula performing an ECM mission. McKone and Freeman Olmstead, the pilot, bailed out successfully and were captured and incarcerated in Lubyanka prison. The AC and three Ravens were lost. President Kennedy intervened and obtained the release of McKone and Olmstead in January of 1961. McKone and Olmstead wrote a book about the incident entitled The Little Toy Dog that I purchased in the mid 60’s. I would like to contact John McKone if anyone knows his location. Also would like to contact: John "Moose" Quine, stationed ar Salina, KS in the late 1950's, originally from Bangor, Maine, lived in Wallingford, Conn in the late 1960's; Joel Ziff, stationed at Forbes in the late 1950's, originally from Philidelphia; Edward Van Cunningham stationed at McConnell in the late 1950's, originally from near Terrytown, NY. If you know of any of these former Air Force personnel, let me know at bbowman@northhighland.com. Thanks, Bob Bowman
