This is an excellent picture of an early model B-47 making a RATO (Rocket assist take off). Early models had the Aerojet liquid-fueled rocket engines located inside the fuselage while later models had external racks with up to 33 - 1,000 Lbs. thrust bottles.  The B-47 Stratojet Association was formed in 1996 to preserve the legacy of the B-47 and to honor the men who flew and maintained it throughout the darkest days of the Cold War.
